Amazon recommendation fail (slight return)

February 14th, 2013 (12:17 pm)

So, I recently received an email from Amazon, suggesting that "As you have recently shown an interest in similar titles, we thought you'd like to browse our selection of period drama DVDs."

Which is fair enough - over the weekend I was looking at The Forsyte Saga (original 1960s version) and thinking it's tempting.

So, present in this selection of period drama titles on offer were Call the Midwife (which I'll admit I've been sort of vaguely thinking I might check out at some point); The Paradise; North & South; Upstairs Downstairs (the recent remake version, though); Lark Rise to Candleford; The Hour; and...

...Auf Wiedersehen, Pet series 4.

I'm stuggling to think of any way in which that counts as period drama. All I've got so far is, it was set 9 years ago. But as it was also made 9 years ago, that seems a bit tenuous...

It started in the early 80s so much of it closer to 20 yrs old. Still, you're right, it was contemporary then and can hardly be retroactively reclassified 'period'! Classic, maybe, or nostalgic, or just an oldie.

Call the Midwife's excellent, incidentally.

I'm watching Call the Midwife now, and loving it, so if you're anything like me you should check it out.
