Attempting...

April 14th, 2013 (02:55 pm)

...to explain to Sarah who Philip Madoc is (because he's the star of some BBC radio adaptations of the Cadfael mysteries in which I thought she might be interested. Her iTunes recently went up the stuff, losing her copies of the unabridged Cadfael audiobooks read by Stephen "Omega" Thorne, and she is seeking replacements. One of them - the unabridged Thorne one, not the Madoc adapt, is available on Amazon, for the price of about £72:00. Yeah. Right. We're full of those tricks. Anyway, I digress).

Because she's a Doctor Who fan, the first thing I suggested was, "well, he was Mehendri Solon in The Brain of Morbius."

<blank look>

...*thinks*..."Well, you know that episode of Dad's Army? 'You, vot is you name?' 'Don't tell 'im, Pike.'..?"

<recognition> "Oh, he was the German in that?!"

I mean, it's probably a bit telling that I couldn't immediately think of much that he'd done, but OTOH, is the man's legacy reduced to that one line in an episode of Dad's Army..?

Hmm 2

Whereas I show my age because the first thing that always comes to my mind, if his name comes up, is as Magua in Last of the Mohicans when I was at school.

I remember him as Uncas, but I bow to your better knowledge.

Thoughtful

If this is the same Philip Madoc I'm thinking of, I actually think of him as that other doctor in the Spine Chillers episode with David Tennant...but that's really not better, is it?

He was the baddy (Uncas?) in The Last of the Mohicans when he was young and very fit in every sense of the term.

No! Uncas is the hero! He was Magua.

He was in Mind to a Kill as a sort of Welsh Inspector Morse and, like curiouswombat, I remember him as Magua. I once heard him read The Hymn to the Aten at an Egyptology conference -- apparently, he was a fan of Akhenaten.
