End of 2014 meme

December 25th, 2014 (09:51 am)

1. What did you do in 2014 that you'd never done before?:
Took part in a LARP (Cardiff Below). Flew to another country on my own, which made me feel all properly grown up.

2. Did you keep your new year's resolutions, and will you make more for next year?:
I didn't, and no, I won't. I tend to just try each day to do a little bit better.

3. Did anyone close to you give birth?:
None that I can think of.

4. Did anyone close to you die?:
Yeah, my dad and my grandfather. The skeletal bloke with the hoodie and the scythe is banned from having anything to do with anyone in my (or Sarah's) family in 2014, or there will be hell to pay.

5. What countries did you visit?:
Ireland, Scotland and Wales.

6. What would you like to have in 2015 that you lacked in 2014?:
A job would be nice.

7. What date from 2014 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?:
Large chunks of it were pretty memorable - some for the right reasons (Blackpool, the various holidays, Whooverville, Project Motormouth, Big Finish Day [whichever number it was], Satellite 4, Collectormania, seeing Raintown twice, the week on the Norfolk broads, Nineworlds - and some for all the wrong reasons (that week-and-a-half in hospital). It's not really easy to single out anything specific.

8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?:
It's not a very significant thing, but for the first time in ages I completed a pre-Christmas re-watch of The Box of Delights. That was good.

9. What was your biggest failure?:
Not getting a job. Also, not making as much use of the resulting free time I had to make a significant dent in the state of the house. Although...it's getting there, gradually.

10. Did you suffer illness or injury?:
The foot wound that went bad as a result of my diabetes and led to me being hospitalised for a week-and-a-half. Thank goodness Sarah panicked about it and made me go to the doctor, who pointed me in the direction of the hospital where I got it operated on - yes, it meant I missed out on Worldcon, but OTOH I could have ended up missing out on a toe or even a foot...

11. What was the best thing you bought?:
In terms of money spent, I think the Lego Millennium Falcon and/or Lego Death Star.

12. Whose behaviour merited celebration?:
Most of my friends and family have been really great people to me. Sarah, of course, has a special place in my heart.

13. Whose behaviour made you appalled and depressed?:
In terms of my immediate social circle, I can't really think of anyone. Further afield, racists, sexists, homophobes, biphobes, transphobes, and general bigots have done their bit to increase the sum total of human misery, but...I think the tide is turning.

14. Where did most of your money go?:
Mortgage. Bills. A tiny collection of Lego Star Wars stuff. That telescope for Sarah.

15. What did you get really, really, really excited about?:
I was all excited about Worldcon. But see above. Apart from that...anything that turned up in the "etched in my memory" section above I probably got excited about.

16. What song will always remind you of 2014?:
None springs to mind.

17. Compared to this time last year, are you
i. happier or sadder? Probably about the same.
ii. thinner or fatter? Again, about the same.
iii. richer or poorer? As I'm now on JSA where a year ago I was in paid employment...well, you decide.

18. What do you wish you'd done more of?:
A paid job would have been nice. Tidying and cleaning the house, also.

19. What do you wish you'd done less of?:
Procrastinating.

20. How will you be spending Christmas?:
Right now, filling in this meme. Later, picking up presents from Sarah's sister and then heading down to Chelmsford (sadly sans Sarah whose annual illness has kicked in with a vengeance...)

21. Did you fall in love in 2014?:
Yes, probably.

22. How many one night stands?:
None. I don't really do them.

23. What was your favourite TV programme?:
Doctor Who, Orphan Black, Stargate SG-1...

24. Do you hate anyone now that you didn't hate this time last year?:
I don't really hate people.

25. What was the best book you read?:
Hmm. Tough one. Probably either Ali McNamara's Breakfast at Darcy's or From Notting Hill to new York...Actually, Ben Aaronovitch's Rivers of London, Claire North's The First Fifteen Lives of Harry August, Kate Griffin's The Glass God, one or two of Catherine Webb's Horatio Lyle books*, Sarah & Rachel Hagger-Holt's Living it Out, R J Anderson's Swift, and Douglas Adams' Salmon of Doubt. I'd be hard pressed to narrow it down further than that, though.

26. What was your greatest musical discovery?:
Raintown are good.

27. What did you want and get?:
My foot wound has healed up, in time for Christmas. Win!

28. What did you want and not get?
A job.

29. What was your favourite film this year?:
Ooh. Don't know. Probably Guardians of the Galaxy, but Captain America - Winter Soldier, Paddington and The Hobbit 3: This time it's Personal were all good too.

30. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you?:
45. Spent a chunk of the day in bed with a headache, then did some tidying and cleaning around the house. Yay. Rock and roll.

31. What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?:
Did I mention I'd like a job?

32. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2014?:
Scruffy chic.

33. What kept you sane?:
Sarah.

34. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most?:
Jenna Coleman is cute. Amanda Tapping and Michael Shanks make even the dullest episode of Stargate SG-1 bearable.

35. What political issue stirred you the most?:
LGBT rights. UKIP and Britain First really annoy me.

36. Who did you miss?:
Dad.

37. Who was the best new person you met?:
I think that would be badfalcon (Cassie).

38. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2014:
That "have you tried turning it off and on again" is a cliche because it actually works.

39. Who did you spend the most time on the phone with?:
Sarah and my mum.

40. Quote a song that sums up your year:
Erm. I don't know!

41. What was your favorite moment of the year?:
See the "etched in my memory" section above. Really can't narrow it down to just one.

42. What was your least favorite moment of the year?:
Being stuck in Watford General Hospital, being pumped full of antibiotics on an IV drip, and my body reacting badly to the antibiotics. I was sick for about four days. Throwing up constantly is no fun. Throwing up constantly when you've not eaten a thing because you have no appetite is even less fun. Knowing that you're missing Worldcon is just the no fun icing on the no fun cake.

43. Where were you when 2014 started?:
I think I was in bed.

44. Who were you with?:
Nobody, as Sarah and I have separate beds.

45. Where will you be when 2014 ends?:
Hopefully at multiclassgeek's and zoeiona's New Year's Eve bash.

46. Who will you be with when 2014 ends?:
Apart from multiclassgeek and zoeiona (obviously), I'm hoping that huntingospray's health will permit her to be there, and also flickums will be down for the shenanigans too, which'll be nice. Not sure who else will be there.

47. What was your favourite month of 2014?
February was good - my immediate post-redundancy holiday in Scotland, the Lake District and Ireland (even if the week in the Lake District was spent with a stinking cold, whilst outside all was wind and rain). June, I enjoyed, mainly for Blackpool. November had both Collectormania Milton Keynes (meeting up with Cassie & Shona and also Amanda Tapping) and Project Motormouth 3 (Peter Capaldi!), whilst December was the month I managed to really knuckle down to the housework, and also got round to going to the Harry Potter Experience thing for which Sarah had brought me my ticket for my birthday last year. Again, not very easy to narrow it down.

48. Did you drink a lot of alcohol in 2014?:
I'm teetotal, so no.

49. Did you do a lot of drugs in 2014?:
None whatsoever. Well, unless painkillers and prescribed meds count?

50. What are your plans for 2015?
I have none, specifically. A job would be nice, but if I can't get one, then just being able to every day make a little bit more of an improvement to my living space - i.e., tidying and cleaning - would be good. One step at a time. Also, I'd like to get through more of my "to read" pile without also adding to it.

*Bear in mind that Claire North, Kate Griffin and Catherine Webb are, in fact, one and the same person.

Cardiff Below? Sounds like fun!

Any idea if it's based on the Brighton Below rules? Had great fun with that!
