Meme, because I'm bored...

December 16th, 2013 (06:10 am)

1. What did you do in 2013 that you'd never done before?
Drove to Scotland and back over one weekend. Actually, visiting Scotland was new in itself. Getting (peripherally) involved in an Eastercon bid committee was a bit of a new departure.

2. Did you keep your new year's resolutions, and will you make more for next year?
I've kind of given up making them. I periodically decide to get organised, manage it for a few days, and then give up.

3. Did anyone close to you give birth?
They weren't close to me - indeed I didn't know them - at the time, but a couple from the LGBT church fellowship group I started going to had their little baby Theo at the start of the year.

4. Did anyone close to you die?
Sarah's aunt Alice.

5. What countries did you visit?
I've been UK-based all year, but did make it to both Wales and Scotland.

6. What would you like to have in 2014 that you lacked in 2013?
More organisation.

7. What dates from 2013 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?
23rd November will be the main one, because DOCTOR WHO - the big 50th celebration at Docklands, followed by watching the episode in 3D at a nearby-ish cinema. There were other pleasant events (Sarah's graduation, holiday in Swanage, the trip to Scotland, Nineworlds, Redemption [including bonus Carrie & Lindsay's wedding], Eastercon, Tony & Becky's wedding), and at least one not so pleasant (the day Sarah's aunt Alice died), but that's the main one, and indeed the most recent.

8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?
...I can't really think of one. I suppose, given my usual degree of 'phone-phobia, ringing my dad without breaking into a sweat was probably something of an achievement, although whether it should have been is another matter.

9. What was your biggest failure?
On the bright side, I can't really think of one of those either. So I suppose it's been a fair to middling year, really. Although, intending to start a Doctor Who-from-the-start rewatch and stalling on episode 1 was a bit naff. Although I'm hoping to get back to that eventually, particularly now that pretty much everything is out on DVD...

10. Did you suffer illness or injury?
Apart from the ongoing depression - which has been mostly under control, with no particularly major episodes that I can recollect - I've been fairly good.

11. What was the best thing you bought?
Erm. Not one specific item, but I made a decision in June, that I'd fill in the gaps in my collection of Big Finish Doctor Who main range audios, mainly using Amazon Marketplace for some nice cheap deals. I had a few anyway, but I've now got a complete run up to about the 80th release or so, and have now started listening to them in release order on the drive into work. It's nice to know that even if the BBC and Big Finish were to stop making new Doctor Who right now (which I doubt would happen) I still have loads of new-to-me stories to enjoy.

12. Whose behaviour merited celebration?
Sarah (whose getting a degree was a big cause of celebration). My mum. My family and friends in general.

13. Whose behaviour made you appalled and depressed?
I'm still occasionally upset about the treatment I received from some people a few years ago (and one person more recently), but...slowly learning to let go of that.

14. Where did most of your money go?
Mortgage, bills, Doctor Who, occasional treats to Sarah.

15. What did you get really, really, really excited about?
Apart from Doctor Who, Sarah getting her OU degree, the trip to Scotland...nothing I can think of specifically. But hey, that's a lot, isn't it?

16. What song will always remind you of 2013?
Probably something from Pet Shop Boys' Electric album. Love is a bourgeois construct, most likely..!

17. Compared to this time last year, are you:
a) happier or sadder? I think happier. Like I said, the depression seems to be levelling out, I'm not getting so upset about stuff from the past...

b) thinner or fatter? I've not weighed myself in ages, but I suspect no real difference.

c) richer or poorer? again, I doubt any significant difference.

18. What do you wish you'd done more of?
Housework. But I'm getting there.

19. What do you wish you'd done less of?
Procrastinating.

20. How will you be spending Christmas?
Saturday 21st seeing my mum and that side of the family for a combined birthday/Christmas do in Chelmsford; Christmas Day at Sarah's mum's with her family; Boxing Day it's recently been confirmed will be at my dad's parents.

22. Did you fall in love in 2013?
Still happily in love with Sarah.

23. How many one-night stands?
None.

24. What was your favourite TV program?
Doctor Who, obviously. Also enjoyed Orphan Black. Apart from that, most of the year has been spent still not catching up with loads of programmes I'm still behind on, including at least two (Merlin and Fringe) that have finished and one (Supernatural) that is still ongoing...

25. Do you hate anyone now that you didn't hate this time last year?
I don't do hate.

26. What was the best book you read?
Probably Stray Souls by Kate Griffin, although that's a bit of a cheat as I'm still in the middle of it.

27. What was your greatest musical discovery?
I'm not sure I really made one. Although getting to see a reformed Dubstar earlier in the year was very pleasant.

28. What did you want and get?
Increased happiness levels.

29. What did you want and not get?
A clean and tidy house. But like I said - working on that one.

30. What was your favorite film of this year?
Probably The World's End.

31. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you?
It won't happen for another couple of days. So far the plans involve going to work, coming home, vegging out in front of the TV, possibly doing some housework, and then going to bed. I know - what a party animal! I'll be <checks> 44.

32. What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?
To be honest, I've reached the point where the redundancy can't come soon enough. Right now, our end date is scheduled for January 31st, at which point with any luck I take the money and run, and have a couple of weeks of holiday before knuckling down to job hunting and signing on.

33. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2013?
Same as usual - scruffy chic.

34. What kept you sane?
Sarah, my friends and family, and the usual meds.

35. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most?
I've still not really moved beyond Charlotte Coleman.

36. What political issue stirred you the most?
Marriage equality, the NHS, and just about every stupid thing Cameron and his bunch do. 2015 can't come soon enough.

37. Who did you miss?
I've seen everyone I care about at least once this year.

38. Who was the best new person you met?
The folk at the LGBT fellowship are awesome and I wish I could meet up with them more than once a month - as it is, I see them less than that, because although we meet up on the second Sunday of the month, I don't make it to every meeting. Apart from them, I've made some awesome new friends online (hi there, badfalcon!!!), but haven't actually met them.

39. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2013:
One thing at a time (not exactly new, but one I need to remember). Don't beat yourself up about stuff you can't manage - just sit down, take stock, and go for it again. You'll get there eventually. Set reasonable and achievable goals.

40. Quote a song lyric that sums up your year:
Erm. Can't think of any!!!

Isn't the drive up Scotland damn beautiful though? I love it. Doing it for the third time this year on Boxing Day! :)

It would've been far nicer had I not been stuck in heavy traffic for most of the M6! But actually being in Scotland was really very pleasant, yes! :-)
