Up the Creek?

January 7th, 2014 (01:35 am)

So, just been re-watching The Clue of the Savant's Thumb and have come to the disturbing conclusion that David Renwick might have forgotten how to write Jonathan Creek. It's just a bit of a disjointed mess, with loads of random subplots that don't really add up to a satisfying whole, even when you know in advance how they fit into the whole. It's not about the length - both Satan's Chimney and Black Canary were movie-length, and worked a treat, and even though the more recent special (The Grinning Man and The Judas Tree) weren't quite as focussed as they could have been, they weren't as poor as Savant.... As if to rub it in, the plot seemed to be at least in part a bit of a mixture of Black Canary (including bonus Gideon Pryke) and Danse Macabre), but nowhere near as well done as either of them.

Which doesn't bode well for the imminent fifth series. Neither does the absence of Sheridan Smith as Joey, whose character has a wonderful rapport with Jonathan. Wiki says it'll feature Sarah Alexander as Polly, Jonathan's wife, who...well, could be good, might not. As she hardly featured in Savant... it's hard to tell. It'll certainly be a different dynamic than any that's featured before. Mind you, Wiki also suggests that Caroline Quentin has expressed interest (or "expressed unstressed," but I think I know what they mean) in returning as Maddy for a guest appearance. No, just bring her back permanently and have done with it! When I met Stuart Milligan at a Doctor Who convention a couple of years back, he said he'd happily return as Adam if they made any more - presumably he was unavailable for Savant..., but the character of Jonathan has apparently moved on from that life, so it would be difficult to shoehorn him back into it.

Oh well.

In other news, have spent most of today in bed sleeping off a headache. Now I should be asleep, I can't get to sleep. Rabbits and blast.

I had pretty much the same reaction as you to "The Clue of the Savant's Thumb" when I first watched it (including the fact that they seemed to be unashamedly stealing from their own previous episodes) and it did not make me particularly hopeful about the new series.
