Coupling - Stuck in the Giggle Loop

I was watching the Zoe Wanamaker episode of Who do you think you are? last night, and I was quite fascinated by the story of her dad who, as a former community party member and left wing political activist found himself with pretty much no other choice in the political climate of early '50s America but to leave the country and flee to England. To be honest, I find the whole thing of McCarthyism, HUAC, etc., to be really rather shocking and disturbing, but it occurred to me that I don't really know a great deal about it.

So I come with a request - can anybody recommend me any decent factual books or documentary programmes/films covering the era in depth? Drama too, for that matter (mind you, I've seen Good Night and Good Luck and it didn't particularly grab me; I guess a decent production of The Crucible would be a must, too, although I've got a tape of a film of it from the late '90s kicking about somewhere).
