Coupling - Stuck in the Giggle Loop

Writer's Block: Fan love

Who is your favorite TV character of all time? Why did s/he make such a big impact on you? Do you collect any memorabilia? Did s/he inspire you creatively in any way?

I seem to be the first person to say this in reply to this particular Writer's Block question - and I hope to high heaven I won't be the last - but here we go:

Well, alright, technically the character's name is the Doctor, but if I say "Doctor Who" that distinguishes him from any other fictional Doctors on TV.

Why he made such an impact on me? Don't know. Right place, right time. I was five when I first became a fan of the show. It was fun, it was cheerful, there was this mad person travelling around time and space dragging his companions - and us along with him for the ride, defeating evil with a yoyo, a bag of jelly babies, and an impossibly long scarf. He's inspired me creatively in that he made me want to write - although I've not written (or at least not finished) many stories that are actually about him (one day...). And yes, I do collect lots of memorabilia, mainly books, magazines, DVDs, CDs, and (less so now) VHS tapes.

Watched Flesh and Stone earlier this morning. Brilliant stuff. The Doctor's still just as great as he was 35 years ago. Indeed, as he was 46½ years ago. Long may he continue.
Coupling - Stuck in the Giggle Loop

Sarah and I are now back from our delayed honeymoon in Egypt. We had, to put it simply, an utterly marvellous time, and are now talking vaguely about when we go back (although it won't be for another couple of years or so, at least. But it's going to happen).

For anyone as is interested, I'm in the process of uploading various pictures of the holiday and a diary/blog which I wrote as we went along. It can be found here. Caution - very picture-heavy, probably not particularly good if you've got dial-up.

Other stuff - am predictably a tad disappointed by the election non-result, although at least last night's HIGNFY election special was a good laugh.

I've been catching up on various bits of TV since I got back to Sarah's place (which will be also my place after next weekend). Loved this Kwik Fit ad that I found in the break of a FlashForward episode:

(Incidentally, what's happened to the old FlashForward Blackberry sponsorship thing with Hermione Norris doing the voiceover? I miss it!)

Caught up with Doctor Who today, and...Matt Smith just gets better and better, in my opinion. He's managing to capture some interesting nuances to the character, including a large chunk of righteous indignation and sometimes out-and-out anger. I can definitely see why Steven Moffat (and the other producers/executives) wanted to cast him. He's definitely My Doctor (but, splended chaps, all of them). Looking forward to next week's episode - that's one seriously tantalising trailer! Similarly, Ashes to Ashes is hotting up as we head for the finale. I hope it pays off the expectations of Life on Mars, thought.

ETA: Oh, and speaking of Egypt, have a Two Ronnies sketch:
