Doctor Who meme

Gacked from dalethetimelord

1. When did you start watching?
My earliest memory of the show (indeed, my earliest memory at all) dates from when I was five years old. I'm sure I'd watched it before then, though.

1a. Why?
Back then, it was just something that several million people watched every Saturday. A bit like it is now. :o)

2. What was your first episode?
The one I remember was an episode of The Ark in Space. My sister and I were at the meal table and were begging our parents to be allowed to leave so that we could watch that night's episode. We made it into the lounge just in time, IIRC, to see the Wirrn collapse on Harry.

3. Which episodes have you seen?
Most of them. I watched it solidly from then on - the only one I'm aware of missing was an episode of Warriors' Gate 'cos we were out for a family trip to the theatre, and I've also watched most of the existing Hartnell, Troughton and Pertwee episodes, and listened to a fair few of the missing ones. There are still a few that I've not seen at all, or that I've not seen since they were first shown.

3a. Favourite?
All the "fan classics", really - Talons..., Pyramids..., Genesis..., Logopolis, Caves.... Of the new series, I particularly enjoyed Dalek, Father's Day, and pretty much everything Steven Moffat's written. But I can get enjoyment from most episodes/serials. My personal guilty pleasure is Terminus, which I love despite it being dismissed as a bit of clunker.

4. Are your friends/family interested in the show?
Yeah - I met Sarah through a shared interest in the programme (we were in a queue for a signing at the Tenth Planet shop), Tim tends to follow the new series and the Confidentials and will happily sit through oldWho eps when I watch them, and my mum watches it too, although she doesn't really keep up with it - I don't think she's watched any of the new series since 2005.

5. Which Doctor is your favourite?
A three way tie between Patrick Troughton, Colin Baker, and David Tennant.

6. Which Doctor is your least favourite?
William Hartnell (mainly because of the characterisation in the early years) and Sylvester McCoy ('cos he's, charitably, not the best actor in the world).

7. Which TV companion is your favourite?
Ace, followed by Romana II, Jo Grant, Captain Jack, and Martha.

8. Which TV companion is your least favourite?
Heresy, I know, but Sarah Jane Smith never really worked for me - there was the whole thing about her being a women's libber, an independent woman, and yet all she seemed to do was scream and get the Doctor to rescue her. Having said that, in The Sarah Jane Adventures I think she's wonderful.

9. Do you listen to the Big Finish audios?
Not as often as I'd like - I can't really afford it - but I get the occasional one or two now and then. I followed the Paul McGann ones up to shortly before Charley left.

9a. If so, which is your favourite?
Of the main range, Chimes of Midnight. I also love Sympathy for the Devil and...the Unbound one with sir Derek Jacobi, the name of which escapes me. I've always had a soft spot for Rob Shearman's work.

9b. Also: which Big Finish companion is your favourite?
Charley.

10. Have you listened to any non-Big Finish audios?
Not many - Slipback, the old Genesis of the Daleks record (had it on LP, although it went the way of all vinyl), the talking book of the first three Target novelisations as read by William Russell (working through that chapter by chapter), and the recent Torchwood radio play.

11. Have you read any of the novels or short stories?
All the NAs and MAs. Most of the PDAs and EDAs. Some of the early 9th Doctor novels. Unfortunately, I haven't had the time or money to keep up with them, although I'm hoping that might change.

11a. Have you written any of the novels or short stories?
I wish!

11b. Which is your favourite?
Any of Lance Parkin's. The ones by Paul Cornell, Mark Gatiss, and David McIntee are also hugely enjoyable.

12. Have you read any of the comics?
Grew up reading the ones in TV Comic, and switched to Doctor Who Weekly when it launched. Have stayed with it through thick and thin.

13. Do you watch any of the spinoffs (e.g. Torchwood, Sarah Jane Adventures)?
Yes.

13a. Which is your favourite?
Of the fiction, The Sarah Jane Adventures, although my absolute favourite is Doctor Who Confidential

14. Is there any particular episode/book/audio/comic you desperately want to watch/listen to/read?
Not specifically. I just take them as they come. Hugely looking forward to the Easter special, and the other specials this year, and the 2010 series, and the DVD releases this year, and...

Fandom

1. Do you write fanfic for Doctor Who?
From time to time.

2. Do you create Doctor Who icons?
Yes. There's one accompanying this very entry.

3. Recommend a fanfic/icon/fanvid/fancomic/fancreation!
Of the fanvids I've seen, the Torchwood one to Banned from Argo is my utter favourite.

4. Have you been to any Doctor Who conventions?
Several. Not many lately, though.

5. Have you ever dressed up as a Doctor Who character?
No, although there was a time when Sarah and I were going to dress up as Romana II and TomDoc from Destiny of the Daleks. Never happened...but never say never.

6. Do you own any Doctor Who merchandise?
Yeah - mainly tons of books, DVDs, VHSs, and CDs, DWMs, and some model Daleks.

7. Are you a fan of Russell T Davies?
Absolutely. Loved his work ever since Dark Season.

7a. Steven Moffat?
Absolutely. Loved his work ever since Press Gang.

7b. Paul Cornell?
Yeah, although in terms of Doctor Who I rate his novels higher than his TV work.

8. What say you to Season 6b?
It's a good way to explain some continuity glitches.

9. The UNIT dating controversy?
I'm a '70s guy myself.

10. The Blinovitch Limitation effect?
Meh. It's a copout, isn't it?

11. Multi-Doctor episodes?
I'd love, just love, for all the surviving actors who've played the Doctor to be gathered together in one place - whether for an episode, or for a charity telethon, or something. After that, though, I'm not sure anything can be done that hasn't already been done.

12. What's your favourite Doctor Who technobabble?
"Reverse the polarity of the neutron flow". As sung to the tune of the sailor's hornpipe...

13. Have you watched other TV shows exclusively because of the presence of Doctor Who actors?
Sometimes. And I'm curious to see Party Animals to see what Matt Smith's like.

14. Have you met any of the actors?
Many. Every surviving Doctor except Christopher Eccleston. Every surviving companion, I think, except Catherine Tate. Many other guest stars and production personnel.

14a. Travelled to any filming locations?
Cardiff (I've seen Ianto's door...); Swansea where The Unquiet Dead was shot; I've walked down the steps of St Paul's Cathedral, and down the Cambridge streets where the Doctor ran from Skagra's sphere...

15. What do you think of The Curse of Fatal Death?
Huge fun.

16. Do you have any fannish opinions that you think are fairly unpopular?
Apart from liking Terminus, you mean? Not many, although I agree with what Dale said - I think some fans are a bit too up themselves, too resistant to change to actually enjoy the show (witness the tiny but vocal minority who slag off everything RTD ever does).

17. What's your favourite pairing?
Romana II/TomDoc. Martha/Ten. Jack/Ianto.

18. What pairing(s) won't you touch with a really long pole?
Any involving Mel, K9, or Adric. Although as a threesome that might wo...no, sorry, move along - nothing to see.

David.
