Techie help sought...

I could do with a bit of help from Mac-savvy folks. I've got a G5 iMac, about four years old, on which the CD/DVD drive seems to have given up the ghost - I put in a CD or DVD (blank or recorded) and makes a few whirring noises and eventually after a minute or so spits it out.

Are there any troubleshooting tips that anyone can recommend? Is this a common problem? (The computer itself seems to be working fine...touch wood.) And if the worst comes to the worst, can anyone recommend a good, not too expensive (preferably under £40:00) external CD/DVD-writer that works well with Macs?
